Math Contest

Interested in math? This article will cover opportunities in the school regarding math as well as a brief overview regarding the details of the numeracy assessment.

There will be several math competitions happening during the following semester. The full list can be found outside of Ms. Paisley’s room (room 232).

The most recent contest that are coming up will be the Fermat Contest for grade 11s, the Cayley Contest for grade 10s and for grade 9s; the Pascal Contest. These three contests follow a format that allows students 60 minutes to complete 25 multiple choice questions. Each applicant is graded out of 150. Although there is a specified grade, those in lower grades wishing to compete at a higher level, are eligible to take part in a higher-grade competition. Taking part in these competitions holds several incentives including a certificate if the applicant is within a top percentage as well as a medal (depending on the contest) for the School Champion. Participating in math contests is also a great detail to list on an application to post-secondary, as it shows an extended interest and commitment to the field of math.

Preparation typically includes practicing questions from previous contests; full solutions to the answers are provided on the CEMC (The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing) website. A quick google search of your specific contest, will bring up their page and list the relevant, past contests. The other four contests can be conveniently found on the CEMC website as well, and thus the general details will not differ greatly from each contest and their awards.
